Vine growing around Lake Balaton dates back to Roman times. Tihany became a significant wine district at the time of the foundation of the monastery. The cellar with its unique double cross floorplan and the classicist press-house were built on the northern shore of the Inner Lake (Belsõ-tó) in 1822 for processing and storing the vines grown on the property of the Abbey. The cellar is still used to store the excellent Tihany wines.
